For as long as there have been Shinigami there have been Hell Shinigami, but they hardly ever interact. While regulard shinigami keep the balance between the souls of the living and the souls of the dead, hell shinigami keep souls that have been sent to Hell there. While their zanpakuto are usually no different than normal shinigami zanpakuto, the difference lies in the nature of their powers. Being from Hell, these shinigami have learned Kontonfuu (Chaos Way) a way of manipulating spirit energy to serve their purposes.
To become a hell shinigami one must be a soul sent to hell and from there seek to reform yourself. It is an extremely long process with the training academy phase being a penance period where the soul must combat each of their sins and subjugate their personal demon(s). Souls in limbo also have the potential to become hell shinigami. By renouncing one's soul to combat evil is another method, though not favored as it requires suicide.
Kontonfuu
Kontonfuu are a set of spells that taint the world around them. This taint can mean multiple things, but mostly tends towards the chaotic with regards to their target.
Zanpakuto
Like their Soul Society counterparts, Hell Shinigami also have zanpakutos and they too are usually in the form of a katana in their sealed state. These zanpakuto differ in one significant in that they do not travel the same path with their power evolutions, instead they have a darker path. The different zanpakuto have been named accordingly, Kyuusai (Salvation) Zanpakuto for Soul Society and Kokuhyou (Damnation) Zanpakuto for Hell.
Zaigoukai
The zaigoukai (Sin Release) is the first release any soul walking will attain. It is symbolic of that soul renouncing their sins in favor of a new life. The spirit of the zanpakuto in this form is usually a manifestation of the soul's greatest sin. As such it will have control over a certain influence over those with similiar sins. Mastery of this form has tendencies to give souls an enlightened feeling.
Maoukai
The maoukai (Devil Release) is the second possible release for Hell Shinigami. While attaining the previous release requires complete selflessness. This is not as simple as giving others what a soul wants for themselves, instead it requires dominance over their personal demon. This may take the form of an actual battle or some other task, but in the end, after subjugating what condemned them to Hell, they will achieve this release. Those who have attained maoukai tend to make the most devoted members to any cause.

The shoukankai (Redemption Release) is the final release for kokuhyou zanpakuto. This release, much like the pure release for kyuusai zanpakuto, can be attained without learning the intermediate release. It is possible, but not likely as this release requires another journey into their soul world where they must come to understand everything about their deeds and dedicate themselves towards bettering the world.
